Professor Sam Tonkin Senior originally started Tonkinkan in the garage next to his living room in Rynfield in 1964. He originally taught Sensei Bert Owen’s ju-jitsu syllabus, until in 1993 when he joined the Jikishin Ju-jitsu Association and adopted their syllabus. In 2004 he passed away after a short illness, and the club is now managed by his son, Sensei Sam Tonkin Junior.
The club has grown substantially since its humble beginning to its magnificent current venue. It now comprises of two halls with a total area of 450 square meters. The mat area alone is 300 square meters, making this one of the largest dojos in the country.
